Short · intro read
Ali Shapiro, MSOD, CHHC, is a holistic nutritionist and the creator of the Truce with Food® framework and the Truce Coaching Certification. Her Truce with Food podcast is ten years and more than a million downloads in. She developed Truce with Food during graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania, drawing on nearly twenty years of client work and her own healing journey of battling food in all its forms, from nighttime eating to secret eating to binging, after having cancer as a teenager. She has guested on more than 70 podcasts, and her work has been featured in Prevention, Forbes, Redbook, Women's Health, and many more outlets.
Long · feature, prep doc, or teaching intro
Ali Shapiro, MSOD, CHHC, is the creator of Truce with Food®, a research-based, trauma-informed approach to defeating eating patterns, and the host of the Truce with Food podcast, now in its tenth year with 300+ episodes and more than a million downloads. Her work has been featured in Prevention, Forbes, Redbook, Women's Health, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and many more outlets, and she spent four years as a recurring nutrition expert on NBC10's The 10! Show.
Her relationship with food started early. She attended her first Weight Watchers meeting at eleven, and at thirteen she was diagnosed with cancer, going through six months of chemotherapy and a month of radiation. After Penn State's Schreyer Honors College and a corporate career, she trained at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, in partnership with Columbia University's Teachers College. Functional nutrition resolved her IBS and depression diagnoses when conventional medicine couldn't, and in 2007 she left corporate America to do this work.
What sent her back to school was the part nutrition could not fix: clients knew what to do and still could not do it. She earned an M.S. in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania to study how people actually change, and Truce with Food came out of that graduate work, built on the Immunity to Change framework developed by Harvard researchers Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey.
Over nineteen years of client work, she has built a practice with roughly a 90% program completion rate and the ICF-accredited Truce Coaching Certification, which trains health coaches, dietitians, therapists, and functional-medicine practitioners in her framework. She has also guest taught or presented inside organizations and communities including the American Nutrition Association, Parsley Health, YPO, Lincoln Financial, and Comcast.

Possible topics
Four subjects Ali loves to go deep on.
Topic 1
The knowing-doing gap
Ali's clients are smart, high-achieving women who have consumed more than enough information about nutrition, and still struggle to follow through. Her training in developmental psychology reframes that gap: when someone can't make a change they genuinely want, it's almost never a knowledge or willpower problem. Something is protecting them from the wanted change. Find what the eating is protecting, and the changes they've been trying to make for years finally occur.
Topic 2
The four triggers of emotional eating
The framework Ali taught on Mayo Clinic's On Nutrition podcast. Emotional eating comes down to four main triggers, which she calls TAIL: Tired, Anxious, Inadequate, and Lonely. Each one points to an unmet need. Once someone can name the trigger behind their phantom hunger, they can eventually catch it before the eating starts. The natural next step for listeners is Ali's Food Stage assessment, which shows them where they are on the path and what the right work is at their stage.
Topic 3
The alcohol-to-sugar pipeline
People quit drinking and, sooner or later, find themselves fighting sugar in new and old ways. It's a pattern Ali first noticed with her clients and inside her group programs: alcohol and sugar were doing overlapping and unique jobs, so removing one leaves the need intact. Ali sees addressing destructive eating patterns as the next development stage after sobriety, not a willpower relapse. Many people don't cover this angle, and yet Ali has professional and academic experience to speak to this increasing phenomenon as more people get sober.
Topic 4
Midlife physiology and cravings
Women in perimenopause and menopause keep hearing either a hormone explanation or a discipline explanation, and neither matches what they're experiencing. Ali teaches the intersection: shifting hormones change how the body handles blood sugar, which changes cravings, which collides with eating patterns that used to stay quiet. Midlife also collides with losing tolerance for people pleasing and being “nice” (this is a great thing, by the way), which brings up old patterns that were never dealt with, and food as an “almost works” comfort. Understanding the bigger development potential, if you see your eating this way, reframes midlife eating and body frustrations.
